Scenes From Hot Springs

Today’s overcast sky and drop from yesterday’s record 80 degrees to today’s mid-40s reminds me of similar weather during our November Hot Springs, Arkansas visit. Sometimes an overcast sky can make for a peaceful, placid picture. Until the geese get moving, that is.

The view of downtown as we rounded a hill proved cozy and charming, white steeple hidden in the clouds.

Autumn leaves littered the streets, where a green banner proclaimed a Chili Cook-Off, of which we later partook.

And further down on Bathhouse Row, we stopped for a cold craft beer, a refreshing end to the day.

Montgomery Clift Double Vision

Methinks these high school twins could pass for young Clift body doubles, especially the one in the bolo tie. For those not familiar with Clift, he was a Method actor in the 1950s and 60s, starring in films such as The Misfits with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, in their last screen roles. Clift himself would die five years after the movie’s release.

Despite the aquiline nose and caterpillar eyebrows, Clift was a good-looking man. Too pretty, in fact. If the charms of the luscious Liz Taylor couldn’t challenge his sexuality, I guess no one could.

Walk Headfirst Into Life

In truth, the eldest son holding both parents’ hands is not Frank Sinatra strolling the streets of Hoboken. It’s a portrait of post-war life, in the biggest Veterans’ Village in the United States, fresh out of the 1947 Oklahoma and Agricultural & Mechanical College yearbook. So if this man looks a bit too old for the university, it’s because he sacrificed part of his youth to serve in WWII, and now it was time to get his learnin’ on.

With the Baby Boom in full effect, veteran students needed houses for their growing families, located near campus. This is where the family lived.
