Put More Sugar In Lisa

This ad from my May 19, 1967 LIFE blows my mind. (scroll down for larger type)

It literally says, “Make sure you get sugar every day. People need what sugar’s got.” People don’t need more sugar. I’ve got plenty of sugar in me. I’ll tell you what I need: Lisa’s life. Lisa’s got it made. Trust fund much? I don’t see anything here about clocking in and working for the man.

Now THERE’S a metaphor!

Baked Alaska To Celebrate

I have so many questions about this image. Some simple assumptions would be that this couple is celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. And by the lettering to the right of the cake, I’ll assume the wife is named Cora. But why is she wearing a dress and pearls, when he is wearing a robe and boutonnière? Is that a cake or just a heap of whipped cream? Is it melting? And what is that brick before the cake? Surely it’s not napkins.

Before Gaga’s Meat Dress, There Was Frank Skirt

Geene Courtney had the honor of being Queen of National Hot Dog Week 1955, a pageant sponsored by the Zion Meat Company. Personally, I’d rather have skipped the meat scarf and just posed with a fish on a skyscraper.

Gail Hooper was paired with this 56-pound catfish (that must have been carried up an elevator all those flights of the Hotel New Yorker), as part of her duty as Miss National Catfish Queen in 1954.

I imagine they both took long, hat baths after that!

That’s A Spicy Meatball, Dad

Good Housekeeping Feb 58

A recipe was included in this “Father and son” meal. However, Good Housekeeping must have known its readers may have preferred an easier way out, as two meatball ads popped up just a few pages later.

Squash King

11/48 National Geographic

Seven-year-old Oliver Davis of Carrollton, Texas was still three years too young to enroll in the FFA or the 4-H, but that didn’t stop him from winning 1st, 2nd, AND 3rd prize for best squash at the 1948 Dallas County Fair.

When Overpriced Shoes Only Remind You Of Delicious Tex-Mex

Glamour Nov 2015

The advertisers may try to bring your eye to their “geometric touches,” but those zigzag white sandal straps put me in mind of the sour cream flourishes on a Chuy’s Tex-Mex platter.

All this can be yours for just over $10. The shoes? Just over a grand. Which would you prefer?

Yes, We Can

Nat’l Geo 11/48

What festive autumn colors! Sixteen-year-old Jacqueline LaVigne, aka Miss Vermont, took part in several 4-H canning projects, using tomatoes from her Essex Center garden. Check out that plastic apron!

This beauty had her hands full at the State Fair in Indianapolis. She was one of the 1,760,000 boys and girls taking part in 4-H Clubs in 1948. During WWII, 4-H club members canned 74 MILLION quarts of food.

But it wasn’t only 4-H members canning. Home canning reached its peak in 1943, with over 4.1 billion jars canned in homes and community canning centers (Bentley, 1998).
