Trees can be snarky. I bet they straighten up as soon as she does. Or perhaps it’s a game of Nature Simon Says?
Finally! Five days left of July, and our fig tree finally decided–after two months of harboring little green pods–to turn them purple and heavy with sweetness. So pluck them I did and off they went into a bowl in the kitchen. It’s been 100 degrees here every day this week, and thick with humidity, so you can imagine what a nice shade tree this provides for two lethargic dogs. And the bonus is–I got to the figs before the ants did!
P.S. If you need more figs, check out Hello, Fig and his neat art.
If you look very closely, you can see the little buds on our vitex tree. Soon it will be covered with purple cone blossoms.
And the cottonwood tree, which was bare last week, is moving full speed ahead! Look at her go!
But that stubborn fig tree still thinks it’s winter. He poked me hard in the back when I was mowing last week, and I still have a bruise to show for it. I should cut a wide swath around him next time.

Sometimes trees are the enemy.
