A hootenanny was originally a gathering of folk musicians. In the mid 60s there was a popular TV show of that name. It started as folk but later added country and jazz. Ironically, the show blackballed Pete Singer who originally brought the word hootenanny to mean a gathering of folk musicians.
I Don't Get It 
Square dancing and sparkplugs. I never saw the connection before. How do they hear the caller of they are singing? Or are they all mouth breathers?
