You’re probably right. A lot of the players/ students were vets. and they were glad to have survived a World War. So a smack on the head was no big deal.
Some studies say the concussions were way less in those days because the big padded helmets are so much harder on the outside, and used as a weapon, and that’s what delivers the dreaded blow to the brain.
Anyway.
What I would fear is taking that leather helmet to the unguarded face. No crossbar at all. Ouch.
And the ref, after the game, jumped right into his second job, driving a taxi, without having to change hats.
