When Lawrence Welk Was Pimp

welk pimp

“A-one, an-a-two, and a-seven.” Such was his catchphrase. At least the first part. Here is Welk surrounded by seven lovely ladies in an array of Skittles colors. This ain’t no accordion solo.

Those of you who are over 60 have seen many decades, and you know that 60 is a lot of years. Can you imagine being married for 61 years? Well, Lawrence Welk was, to his wife Fern, from the Depression to the year we voted Clinton president. No scandalous stories of adultery there. In fact, the host of The Lawrence Welk Show actually fired one of his “Champagne Ladies” for showing too much leg. Did you know that  his California Model A Ford license plate read “A1ANA2”?  Wunnerful, wunnerful.

  1. I watched many episodes of ‘The Lawrence Welk Show’ with my Nana and Pop Pop on my mother’s side, Kerbey. They loved the show. And I loved that they loved it. Myron Floren was pretty great on the accordion for his orchestra, too, and as a Polish kid, I had to know that. 🙂

      1. I could believe that. Those bubbles were pretty cheesy. I think the champagne music they spoke of was meant to mean you needed a couple of drinks to get in the mood.

  2. Not a fan, not a fan. My inlaws watch it weekly and it just seems so silly. But it’s good clean (bahahaha) fun, yes, which there isn’t enough of on TV. And big band music is a beautiful thing.

The license plate is funny–true story.

  3. Folks often don’t realize Welk was actually of German ethnicity; his folks lived in Ukraine. As I kid I watched a lot of Welk. It was very…wholesome. The Lennon Sisters, Bobby & Cissy, Myron and the gang.

At the end of the show Welk would always announce his touring schedule with a statement: “Vee are goink to pee in your town on…”

  4. Lawrence Welk was a big deal at our house. Required family viewing. I can still feel the soap bubbles on my eyelids. 🙂

Then on Monday mornings, the rest of the nerds were sit around the cafeteria discussing the program as if it were the Walking Dead. . .good times. 😉
