Totem Time Tuesday

PopMech027

Remember last week when you said you were just itchin’ to find a way to fashion a totem pole out of empty spools? Well, consider yourself scratched.

Imagine how thrilled your husband will be, when he comes home to find this decorative display as a testament to your nine hours of productivity. Dinner and ironing be darned. Look, if you can’t pursue your dreams in a career, you can at least assure yourself that there’s still a trace amount of creativity left in that post-baby body. Remember how good you were at 3rd grade art? That girl’s still in you! And the process could not be easier.

PopMech026In fact, if there’s still wine in the bottle if you have extra energy, you can make this little Mexican hombre with a sombrero and a pincushion butt–sure to delight any visiting friends and family. Hijole! he says, each time you prick him. What a fun conversation-starter!

  1. I think building Sauder furniture out of a box without my progressive reading glasses would be easier than this needlework, Kerbey. Would you look at those instructions?

I’d sooner have success taking over the next heart transplant over in the operating room at Upstate. At least there the group huddling around me would have tips and offer comfort to my befuddlement.

  2. oh, the kitsch. She looks super happy so I think it was worth it for her to make it. Though the smile might be the afterglow from the wine?

Funny thing: Bought my mother-in-law a pincushion for her bday at a craft fair–It’s maybe 6 inches across and turns inside-out for carrying. And the outside rim has pockets for spools of thread (said spools were included with purchase 🙂 ). Thinking she would have preferred the tiki tiki tiki pin cushion. Or the sombrero-style as the wine-bottle cork can be used in the hat. Olé indeed.

    1. You’ve really got your thinking cap/sombrero on today. I think our mother-in-laws were the last generation to be into needlework, although I have a few friends who knit. It’s a wonder these things didn’t take off. I do love tiki tiki things. It makes me want to roast a pig.

  3. Now that is what is wrong with the world today. Not enough crafting. I don’t mean lame scrap booking. I am talking full bore multi- dimension objects of art. Now seriously who would not adore a statue of Pancho getting his pupik pierced by a succulent plant?

      1. The huge stone figures on Rapa Nui ( Easter Island, off the coast of Chile ) — the natives had built them as protectors of their coastline and thought they were imbued with the spirits of their ancestors.

Anyhoo…. never mind on my idea — the damn thing melted.
