Do you think the photographer told them to not look at each other, Kerbey, or nobody ever looked at each other as they went about their nightly business back then? So very interesting.
Surely the photographer told them just to concentrate on the task at hand. I would think the family talked among them selves. I mean homework, darning and the newspaper only took so much time.
That’s a good question. I figured Dad worked all day long and didn’t want to hear any incessant chatter, and just wanted to rock in the most comfortable chair.
Kerby, another beautiful picture. The clarity of the print is wonderful. If I was kicking around in 1908 I would be out doors as long as possible and if the family was actually as non verbal as the pic implies I am sure I would be the town rake. Visiting pool halls and taverns whenever possible.
What a proper turn of the century lady. If we were both there maybe I would escort you and give them something to talk about. Hey girl I really like your new hair. Nice and loose.

I’d guess you’re right-on, Benson. It it’d still be a guess. 🙂

Yep. I just always think most folks talk as much as my family does. Maybe old timey guys were taciturn.

I think it was a cross-section then, just as now, but likely more toward taciturn because that was the general expectation.

The town rake. Ha! I’d want to be at the tavern, but it would be improper, so I’d stay home, doing the wash by hand. 🙂

What a great pic — makes one reflect on the loss of family togetherness in this modern times.

How long has the cable been out? Long enough to grow a mustache as cool as the rocking chair guy’s?

If it were out that long, I would have died of cardiac arrest!
