go, Sammy! And depeche mode started playing in my head, but thought you were betraying the ’80s by throwing in a ’90s song. But nope–1989. Guess I wasn’t paying att’n that year. Or more likely, I was listening to MC Hammer, de la Soul, etc. Did you like the rap?
Oh, of course! My friends and I would go clubbing senior year bc we liked to dance, and they would play Depeche Mode, but also Young MC “Bust a Move” and rap as well. If it was on the radio. I should know it. Now I’m going to be scared if I make a 90s reference that I’ll be betraying the 80s! We had a new drummer at church yesterday and he arrived with a bright pink T-shirt, light rinse jeans, and pink tennis shoes, and I said, “Hello, 1984!”
Obviously, that last sentence is laden with truthiness. Honestly, I had to ask two people if 1984 was a mute bc he banged a gong for two hours before speaking a word. When he did, it was to say that the new Stryper CD just came out. Seriously. But he looked fit and normal and mid 40s. He knows all the names of all the drummers, guitarists, etc in 80s bands, and I can believe that.
Well, I studied BEFORE clubbing. You can’t feel superior to others (and to Goofus) if you don’t get A’s. Plus, nobody got there until 10pm or 11pm, so there was a lot of evening to be reading. And then an ensemble, some hairspray, and 4 hrs of dancing! Woot!
On a school night? Even on a weekend I couldn’t have gone out and stayed out that late. (Sure, could’ve snuck out, but I was Gallant, remember?)
lol 1984 dude. He is new to your church? Sounds like a character and good addition to your band.
Ironically, my youngest’s latest Highlight came yesterday and was reading G2 this morning. Turns out I’m more like Goofus these days as one of the drawings was Goofus getting out of bed looking tired and the caption talked about him staying up too late and being tired in the morning. Your late nights are not so voluntary, but I am making a choice to skip sleep 😦 How Goofus is that.
Well, Liz, Thursday was “alternative” night, the night we most wanted to go, so yes, senior year we did go then, but I don’t recall how often. Always Fri and Sat nights, but then Wednesday was “Early 80s night” in college, so we had to go then as well. It sure kept my abs flat.
Someone to hear your prayers…someone who cares….

what did Mr. 1984 say back?
Envy your clubbing. I was home studying. And watching MTV.
Do not worry about betraying the ’80s. They are all around us and should not fear other decades. No one can beat the soundtrack of the ’80s.

Missed his senior season after popping his hammie in the yearbook photo session. I can see it in his grimace. Ouch!
