Delectable Vegetable Soup

LifeFeb41-044

You already know soup is good food, but here are some more soup-related quotes to stir your soul.

Anyone who tells a lie has not a pure heart, and cannot make a good soup.–Ludwig van Beethoven

Let me be the first to tell you, drinking alcohol is the worst thing to do in cold weather. Hot soup is the best because the process of digesting food helps to warm you up.–Morgan Freeman

Soup is a lot like a family. Each ingredient enhances the others; each batch has its own characteristics; and it needs time to simmer to reach full flavor.–Marge Kennedy

A first-rate soup is more creative than a second-rate painting.–Abraham Maslow

I live on good soup, not on fine words.–Moliere

Whenever something went wrong when I was young – if I had a pimple or if my hair broke – my mom would say, ‘Sister mine, I’m going to make you some soup.’ And I really thought the soup would make my pimple go away or my hair stronger.–Maya Angelou

  1. Soup. Have you ever had a soup disaster? I made a blueberry soup once. I left it in the fridge for my husband to snack on. Snack on it he did. Don’t live on blueberry soup. Or you’ll be purchasing a lot of toilet paper.

  2. you know I have a big smile on my face right now 😀 I Don’t Get It posted food today 🙂 Fun quotes. But I Don’t Get Maslow’s. Isn’t a first-rate anything better than a second-rate something? Love that even Beethoven got into the conversation. Wonder what kind of soup he liked.

    1. Maslow is really impressed by soup and not great artwork. He is the man who created the “hierarchy of needs,” so he knows what you need. And it’s soup.

I have had some good tortilla soup in my life that rivals anything in the Museum of Art. And the first time I had tomato basil soup at Le Madeleine, I sang “Ode to Joy.” So probably something tomato-based.

    1. But not Campbell’s, right? Campbell’s has little diced fetus-looking pink chunks. I want shredded white chicken like city folk eat. And how’s your frozen city right now? Hovering right at 31 degrees?

      1. It’s was “Homestyle” Chicken and Dumplings. While not the panacea I wish it were, it did the job. I should have went with clam chowder. It is, indeed, around 31 degrees and has all day. We did have a few days of 50 degree weather, but that only made us sicker with the drop in temperature.

      2. You can’t be sick. It’s a week ’til Christmas, and if I knew you, you’re dressed in red and green like an elf, playing old Ray Coniff albums on the Victrola and singing at the top of your lungs. I mean the opposite of that. You probably have wood stain on your fingers. 😉

  3. Soup is my FAVORITE thing in the World! my husband always jokes that when he goes out of town that he is amazed that I am still alive after only eating soup and more soup. I overdose on soup when he is away lol! Campbells is actually down the street from my old apartment, I tried to get a job in their archive department. Would be fun to work with all those old images, like the one you posted 🙂

    1. THAT’S how you keep your figure! It sure would be fun to work with those images. I had a black bean soup yesterday with Triscuits for lunch and then 12 bean soup with sourdough bread for dinner. Do you prefer crackers or bread?

  4. Soup is something, that’s for sure, and you prove it here, Kerbey. I like to go all crazy at a restaurant and say, “I want the soup AND the salad!” Put that in your list of quotes. In the winter, my dear wife Karen makes a homemade minestrone in the crockpot … Wow! A loaf of warm Columbus Bakery bread for us too and that is a meal right there. Soup out, though, I am always quite happy when I find a good French Onion, with a hearty beef-based broth and thick croutons and cheese that’s crusted but you can still pick off the crock with your fingers. OK? Enough? I love soup!

What a great ad. I wish Campbell’s would have hired you for archives, ‘lizze. Sounds like you are a natural. Don’t give up. Try again!

    1. Yes, I like a nice chunky hunk of bread for sopping. I haven’t had French Onion in 20 yrs since I worked at a Coco’s. I did like it, though. Your quote has made me want to go to Olive Garden and get their endless soup and salad. I just wish those breadsticks were chunkier. They taste like Subway bread sometimes.

      1. The Olive Garden salad and soup are both satisfying courses (and meal). But the bread sticks are not, not, not. Good call on that one, Kerbey. Hey, get back out there and try French Onion again. What happened with that?

      2. If I’m at a restaurant, I always get entrees. A bowl of soup usually doesn’t fill me up. Of course, I love me some Hot n Sour with Chinese food!

      3. It’s an asian soup that’s all the rage; they have Pho restaurants all around here. Big bowl of broth and you put in what you want: bean sprouts, cilantro, pick a meat, some shredded carrots, noodles. Probably better if you have the flu.

      4. I had Vietnamese soup once when a friend convinced me to go to expand my horizons and go to a Vietnamese restaurant here in that growing neighborhood in Syracuse, more than a decade ago, now that you’ve made me think about it with your description of Pho. And that soup was outstanding, Kerbey, and much like you write of here. And I did not have the flu, foo.

  5. Soup is good. I like the “cream of” soups (or chowders) made with milk. As a Canadian i have to object to the artist’s rendition of the back door. Up here, most have either a mudroom (kids use the bcak door and having them tromp with dirty boots into the kitchen is every Momma’s nightmare) and/or at least a storm door. i bet that drawing is a southerner’s rendition of a winter day.

    1. You could be correct. You usually are. The only mudrooms I have seen are on Home & Garden TV shows. States with zero precipitation do not have mud. Although somehow there was mud on the floor of the Goodwill changing stall today…

  6. You know that picture is pure advertising balderdash. The real caption would be, ” How many times do I have to tell you, take off your shoes. You’re tracking snow and mud all over my freshly cleaned floor.”

  7. Soup. No matter how jaded you may be you will always have fond memories of soup. I am able to make some pretty good cream soups, due to the business I was in ,and people still buy them. I prefer a brothy hearty soup with a crusty bread.
