Ha ha ha! I imagine it as the trumpety brass sound of the adults in a Peanuts cartoon. My husband is thankfully (not yet at least) prone to that behaviour but his father is terrible for it. Even when we interrupt and tell him he has told the anecdote before, sometimes recently, he insists on finishing the story.
What he hears: “Blah, blah, blah blah…”

Do you suppose he truly remembers he told it, or just wants to hear himself tell it again?

I think the latter.
