In the spring of 1958, LIFE photographer Russell Halford took a series of photos of Los Angeles motorists.
Some were irritated.
Some were happy to offer a light.
And some were dangerously mid-beauty routine.
I don’t think it’s going to help.
As an aside, note the nub shown through her window. That’s how we used to lock car doors. You could push them up and down.
Do women still use those eyelash thingies? I remember my Mom used them but haven’t seen them since, we’ll, forever.

I bought a couple lash curlers in my 30s but they didn’t seem to do much good. I still see them sold in stores, but I gave mine to Goodwill.

She is probably yelling at Stan about his hat. That is one grand hat, and she sure does look like a Harpy.

Ha! I haven’t heard “harpy” in years. I try to keep hussy alive, but we’ll have to bring back harpy. Googling harpy is quite an odd image…

Hussy is a very good word, but for some reason harpy just popped in my head.

Well, she is griping like a harpy, for sure. A hussy would be an entirely different set of acts.

And if you had a coat hanger you could also use those nubs to get into your car if you left the keys in the ignition.

I actually had to do that and saw it done many times as well. đŸ™‚

Great photos. I think you are right about the red light though she could also be ticked because he just told her he lost his job. Or their savings because of his gambling addiction. I currently have an eyelash curler in a drawer but the price tag is still on it. And I bought it two years ago. Will use it eventually.

Ha ha! I kept two different curlers for 3-4 years and then just gave them to Goodwill. Maybe you should try yours today!
