Before Gaga’s Meat Dress, There Was Frank Skirt

Geene Courtney had the honor of being Queen of National Hot Dog Week 1955, a pageant sponsored by the Zion Meat Company. Personally, I’d rather have skipped the meat scarf and just posed with a fish on a skyscraper.ย

Gail Hooper was paired with this 56-pound catfish (that must have been carried up an elevator all those flights of the Hotel New Yorker), as part of her duty as Miss National Catfish Queen in 1954.ย

I imagine they both took long, hat baths after that!

  1. Lady Gaga is an odd duck; meat dress and all. That Frank skirt wasn’t much better but at least the meat was cooked. Now that is one big fish. Gail is holding a fishing rod and reel but it appears to be a fly rod. Good luck catching a monster like that with it.

  2. I am not sure I would take it as a compliment to be named and hailed as the hot dog queen. Hot dogs make me want to heave just at the thought of them so I would be green about the gills if I had to wear any kind of hot dog garment.

      1. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hooray! I don’t mind eating meat from one animal; it’s just the visual in my mind of a huge vat of the “not good enough” parts like hooves and snouts of 50 beasts being mixed about like a witch at her cauldron that makes me dry heave.

  3. “Queen of National Hot Dog Week”… Ha! That reminds me of a time in college (a long, long, long time ago) when a kid from a small town in Western Kansas, glowing with pride, showed me a photo of his High School Girlfriend. She was wearing a crown in front of a banner that said “1974 Heifer Queen.” I wanted to warn him that some kids from the city might not understand the honor of being a “Queen of Cows,” but I let him have his moment.

The odd thing is that a year later she came to the university and we became close friends. Her boyfriend had told her about me and she sought me out. I never told her that I knew she was once the Queen Heifer.

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Ha ha, that is a great story. I know that heifer has that meaning of being as big as a cow and I wouldn’t want to be called that. Technically, it’s a cow that hasn’t had a calf, so you’d think that would be a compliment. So svelte and young and fresh! Of course, her title means she DID beat out all of the other ladies. I’m glad you two never got into an argument and you yelled, “Queen Heifer!”

  4. These were so hilarious! ๐Ÿ˜€
I love Lady Gaga now that I know why she did the weird egg costume, being carried into the music awards or something (!?)
Her voice and Christmas duets with Tony Bennett bring me back to my childhood memories. . .
Definitely, Madonna and Bette Midler created weird scenes and got lots of followers. . . Now, Bette makes family friendly movies as a Grandma. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’—
